A Pair of Cuba-bound Humanitarian Ships Listed Lost subsequent to Departing Mexican Waters.
A large-scale search and recovery effort is currently in progress in the Caribbean waters for a pair of lost sailing vessels transporting humanitarian supplies traveling from the Mexican coast to the island of Cuba.
Military Search and Rescue Missions Initiated
Mexico has dispatched naval assets and search planes to locate the missing boats, which were carrying no fewer than nine total sailors, according to a navy statement.
The ships had been expected to arrive in the Cuban capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and zero verification of their docking, authorities reported.
The Situation of Relief to the Island
Cuba has relied heavily on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the island grapples with repeated national electricity failures.
"The skippers and their teams are experienced sailors, and both vessels are fitted with appropriate safety systems and emergency beacons," a representative involved in the effort commented.
The nine crew members are from France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexico said it has been in touch with coast guard agencies from those nations along with their embassy officials.
"Our team is co-operating fully with the relevant authorities and are still optimistic in the crews' ability to safely arrive in Havana," the official further stated.
Recent Humanitarian Mission
Just days before, the government in Havana warmly welcomed and greeted with fanfare a different ship that had transported 14 tons of relief supplies to the country.
That boat, called "Granma 2.0" in reference to the vessel in which the revolutionary leader landed in Cuba to launch the armed struggle in the 1950s, delivered solar panels, drugs, formula milk, cycles and food.
Larger Political Climate
Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have primarily led attempts to ship critical assistance to Cuba beginning in January, a period which saw a fuel embargo on the Communist-run nation came into effect.
Global bodies have since highlighted ""critical" supply shortages, with over 50,000 operations postponed in Cuba amid electricity supply constraints.
Diplomatic pressure have been ramped up in recent months, with statements from various leaders emphasizing the complex situation regarding relations.
Reacting to certain proposals, a high-ranking Cuban official insisted that "the governance model of Cuba is non-negotiable."
Accounts suggest that preliminary steps of talks commenced, although their ongoing development remains uncertain.
The naval forces affirmed it was dedicated to using the full extent of its capabilities at its reach to locate the sailboats and secure the safety of the sailors.
To date, there has been silence on the lost ships by the Cuban government.
