Adult Swim's Top Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Substantial Extension for Two More Seasons.
During the fall season, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the network introduced a fresh animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. In an era often marked by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.
"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
A President's Endorsement
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat style.
"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about watching this lovable family go about their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to help comedy break out of its prevailing layer of irony. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
Future Seasons
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to experience the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
