Eric Adams Plans to Back Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayoral Race

NYC's current mayor Mayor Adams revealed his decision to support former Governor Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral race, even after an extended period of public tension between the pair of Democrats.

A Surprising Reversal After Previous Accusations

Just last month, Adams had strongly criticized the former governor, calling him a “deceptive figure and a untruthful person” and accusing him of having “a history of marginalizing Black political contenders.” Nonetheless, in a new statement, Mayor Adams made a U-turn, revealing he now intends to campaign alongside Cuomo in communities where he maintains strong support.

“It's essential to energize the Black and brown communities that have experienced gentrification on how vital this race is,” the mayor stated.

He added, “Residents have seen their housing costs rise in terms of neighborhood changes and they have been ignored in those areas, and I’m going to go to those communities and talk directly with community leaders and organizations and I’m going to walk with the former governor in those neighborhoods and get them involved.”

Election Landscape and Current Developments

The mayoral contest has so far been shaped by the competition between Cuomo and democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, whose rise in the polls has attracted attention worldwide and represented hopes for a revitalized leftwing of the Democratic party.

During a latest candidate forum, both Mamdani and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa declared they would decline the mayor's support if offered.

Earlier this year, the mayor had begun his bid for another term as an unaffiliated candidate after being indicted on legal accusations which were later dismissed in exchange for Adams’s cooperation with government enforcement actions across New York City.

During a separate media briefing on Thursday, the mayor answered reporters asking about the support announcement by stating, “Andrew and I will appear together this evening.”

The announcement followed a day after Adams and Cuomo were seen sitting courtside together at the New York Knicks’ season opener at Madison Square Garden, which occurred right after a contentious mayoral debate.
