Jurgen Klopp admits a return to coach Liverpool is conceivable.
Jurgen Klopp, who departed from Anfield in 2024, has suggested that a future comeback is a possibility. The 58-year-old, following a hugely successful near-decade reign that included Champions League success and the Reds’ first league title in 30 years, has since taken on roles overseeing worldwide football with the Red Bull group and providing guidance with the German Football League.
Fan Sentiment and Klopp’s Candid Remarks
Liverpool won the league title last season, yet numerous supporters who revere Klopp would welcome the idea that he may eventually return. In a wide-ranging interview, he shared with Steven Bartlett: “I declared I will never coach a different club in England. Which implies in case it's my former club...absolutely. It's plausible.”
“At 58 years old, which suggests I could make the decision down the line, it's uncertain. Do I have to make the decision today? If so, I wouldn't return. But thank God, no such pressure exists. I'll wait and observe what lies ahead.”
What Would Lure Him Back?
Questioned regarding the specific conditions would need to occur to tempt his return to management, Klopp admitted he was not instantly drawn for a comeback. “It's unclear to me, My present work fulfills me,” he said. “I don’t miss coaching; I avoid standing under bad weather for two-and-a-half or three hours; I'm glad to skip press conferences four times, three times a week or doing numerous chats weekly.
“No nostalgia for the changing area as a dressing room, yet sharing a meal with the players having a nice chat, is pleasant. We won a lot of games meaning regularly positive atmosphere in the building. I can still hear Van Dijk's laughter vividly recalled for example.”
Praise for His Successor
He spoke highly regarding Arne Slot, crediting him for the adjustments which secured the championship last term. Liverpool have lost a string of losses across various tournaments following significant transfers, though he denied the idea that it might signal the start of a downward turn.
“[Liverpool have] a top-class attacker such as Wirtz, you will all eat your words if you use the wrong words. He’s an incredible talent. [Hugo] Ekitike, superb talent. This is a well-built thoughtfully assembled roster. Fans shouldn't fret regarding the Reds, things will improve.”
Heartfelt Words for Diogo Jota
He shared movingly about the death of the Portuguese star, a 2020 acquisition in 2020, along with the consequences for the team. The Portugal international lost his life in a vehicle collision with his brother in July.
“Can you substitute somebody like Diogo? It’s not about his footballing ability, it's his character. I can’t imagine the dressing room without him in it. I find it difficult to discuss about it. A devastating blow for his teammates too. Nobody at Liverpool will ever use it as an excuse though it's a fact. You walk in a dressing room which he filled completely. Dealing with that emotionally is difficult. Unbearable.”
