New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will be OK after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.
“That gives me comfort, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His family, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he has been listed as in critical but steady condition.
“Still unsure,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that reassures me, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”
NYPD shared surveillance images Monday of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack remains under investigation and police mentioned it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims were reported.
The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday in the area between the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The assailant escaped.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a child.
“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd was inactive this season, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on 18 August with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.
He joined the Jets as a new signing in spring and was anticipated to become a key part of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on early August and had to be helped off.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. He is completely involved. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in 2019. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in last year and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
