Prison Shock: Brazil's FormerPresident Jair Bolsonaro Confronts Time Behind Bars
He fought the legal system and the law prevailed.
A couple of months subsequent to receiving a twenty-seven-year sentence for trying to “annihilate” Brazil’s democratic institutions, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro now looks destined for incarceration.
Expected Jailing
The adjudicated plotter – who's been under home confinement in his mansion while a set of legal procedures and petitions unfold – is largely predicted to be imprisoned in the next few days, amid increasing speculation that he will be sent to a well-known high-security penitentiary.
Historical Comments on Convicts
Throughout Bolsonaro’s long public life, the far-right former soldier showed scant mercy for the country's inmates.
“Why should we provide those dirtbags a good life?” he once mused. “They should just get messed, period. That’s what I reckon.”
In another instance, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Unless you desire to finish behind bars, the only thing required is not sexual assault, kidnap or theft.”
Incarceration Facility Speculation
However the prospect of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda high-security prison in Brasília has horrified allies, several of whom this week toured the prison in an apparent effort to discourage the supreme court from banishing him there.
The senator, a politician from Bolsonaro’s political party who was one of the visitors, stated he predicted the 70-year-old leader to be incarcerated in the next 10 days and worried his destination could be Papuda.
Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s serious digestive issues – the consequence of a life-threatening stabbing during the 2018 political campaign – meant it would be risky to keep the one-time head of state there. “His [health] situation is very grave. He won’t be able to handle it if they take him to Papuda … It would be dreadful,” he added, who also voiced anxiety about packed cells and the standard of prison meals.
During his tour Papuda, Lucas recalled witnessing cells accommodating four dozen detainees: “That’s practically one square metre per inmate.
“We talked to the convicts and they grumble, naturally, of the horrible cuisine,” remarked the senator.
Backers React
He is not the sole person speaking out prior to the one-time head of state's anticipated imprisonment.
Penning in a major newspaper, another ally, the ex- cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “harsh” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “flawless” political career and alleged Brazil was about to witness “the largest political injustice in its record”.
“It represents an injustice that eats away the spirits of many of Brazilians,” the former minister said.
Divided Public Response
That may be correct due to the significant backing Bolsonaro retains on the right-wing. Yet his expected incarceration has also gladdened the hearts of many individuals who think he should be incarcerated for plotting to prevent his successor from taking power – and also conspiring to have him killed.
Congressman Otoni, a representative for the sitting leader's political party, said: “Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in a dark cell. No one desires Bolsonaro to be put in solitary confinement. Nobody desires Bolsonaro to go hungry or for him to have to lie on concrete. We want him to receive proper treatment – but proper handling behind bars. He cannot carry on being his own prison warden for his entire life.”
He observed how Bolsonaro backers, who have for a long time applauding the harsh handling of inmates, had unexpectedly woken up to their entitlements. “Only now has the conservative fringe – which has always asserted that civil liberties are not for lawbreakers – chosen to inspect a penitentiary to learn what conditions are really like,” he remarked.
“He is a criminal,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he merited “degrading, degrading conduct”.
Possible Incarceration Environment
Regardless of rumors that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which currently houses about thousands of detainees, his more likely location appears to be a adjacent jail for officers and other “unique” detainees referred to as Papudinha (Minor Papuda).
His potential cell are far more comfortable than those in the primary facility, although nonetheless a distant from the luxury Bolsonaro enjoyed while occupying the stunning presidential palace, around 20 kilometers away.
According to sources, the accommodation Bolsonaro could anticipate inhabit in Papudinha is about 24 square meters – about the size of vehicle spaces – and features a 12 sq metre restroom with a bathing area and a 12 sq metre balcony. “The ex-president might be allowed to have a set and also a cooler in his quarters as long as they were supplied by his relatives,” the report indicated.
Partisan Reactions
The lawmaker denounced the rumoured proposal to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “an act of revenge” on the part of the judicial authority who led Bolsonaro’s coup trial and will determine his future in the {
