Antony Price, the influential style architect responsible for a series of unforgettable images favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.

Price was best known for his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, including the light-hued ensembles that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."

His passing follows just weeks after he debuted his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to fuse tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included several ensembles for her American tour after becoming Duchess.

Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Theatrical Flair: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

The fashion world mourns the loss to a authentic original whose legacy on fashion and music remains profoundly felt.
