The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Selected the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Track
The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated adventure from the beloved role-playing group, revealed an exciting opening credits. It features our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while teasing at several heart-wrenching personal histories for key figures including Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
All in all, the opening appears amazing. However, I felt that something was missing in the music selection.
This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar composition composed by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a great sentimental choice, and I suspect that devotees of the second campaign will love its presence.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the excitement and excitement that was part of the show's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.
Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was memorable and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes for me. It's a grand composition, but from what I know of this party, I feel that its tone is a little off.
Naturally, the creators has stated that the animated show will have a few changes and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening seems to be one of them.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait until then, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
