The Northern Irish champion celebrates Spoty success with individual and team awards.

Seconds before the announcement, a nervous idea flashed through the golfer's mind. He revealed he was hoping, "Please don't let it be an F1 driver again."

"It's been a fantastic night for golf," the champion said. "Golf was recognized in such a big way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a special evening for golf, and perhaps we can use that."

This time around, however, there was no last-minute surprise. The result was decisive, allowing a delighted McIlroy to enjoy a standout evening for both himself and the European Ryder Cup winners, who were honored as the top squad.

A Whirlwind Schedule

Instead of opting to celebrate at the post-ceremony celebrations, McIlroy was already plotting his upcoming event. Having just played in the Golf Channel Games in Florida and jetted to the UK, he was heading straight back to Florida.

"It's been a whirlwind 24 hours," McIlroy explained. "I am anticipating a little bit of rest over Christmas."

Hunger for More

Nevertheless, McIlroy made clear he has no desire to become complacent, despite achieving the career grand slam earlier in the year. "My belief is I've got a few good years in me," he claimed.

"Further big titles, order of merit titles, Ryder Cups, that's the target. But provided that you feel like you can keep progressing and have the hunger, that's the most important thing."

Collective Honor

At the same time, fellow European Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to collect the squad honor, also lauded golf's exceptional night and his pal's personal achievement.

"They are the memories that will stay with us indefinitely so to get the public's recognition for that is amazing," he commented. "Seeing Rory pick that up, I think he deserves it so much."

When reminded that McIlroy was only the third in his sport to win the award in its seven-decade run, Fleetwood grinned before adding, "Golfers aren't top of the list are we!"

Looking Ahead

He is aiming to secure his initial major championship next year but he recognized McIlroy still desires more success. "If you want to be the best you can be, and you're still motivated, you'll find things to work on," Fleetwood explained.

Football Loyalty

Prior to his departure, an additional topic was raised. Being a massive Manchester United fan, he has been invited to show his trophies at Old Trafford before. Would he be tempted to do it again after his latest triumphs?

"If they stop conceding so many goals on their own pitch," he answered with a grin. "There is progress. There's a little bit of positivity around."

Following a 2025 for the ages, it's no wonder that Rory McIlroy is looking on the bright side.
